Find beauty in the architecture of temples and fortresses scattered between peaks and forests

The architecture throughout Bhutan astounds even the most seasoned travelers. The massive Dzongs (fortresses) once acted as defensive structures, but now house district administration and the monk body. They tower over the valleys and can be seen for miles around. Temples, like the famed Taktsang (Tiger's Nest), are impressively built on high peaks, jutting out of cliff faces, or along the banks of rivers. The construction of homes by the traditional 'mud-ramming' technique makes for villages that complement their natural surroundings.
